Fiero Funny Noise When I Let Clutch Pedal Out in Nuetral

    Clutch noisy when let out in neutral/idle...?

    Just wondering out of more curiosity than anything else (I swear I'm not worrying ) if a heavy duty Disco clutch (the last owner told me it was heavy duty, I have no idea if it actually is or not) is meant to sound a bit noisy if you're just sitting there in neutral and the clutch pedal is out. The noise goes away if I push the clutch in.

    It's not a really loud bad noise but I've never heard a clutch as loud as this one before. It's done it the whole time I've had the car, I just figured it was normal. Hasn't caused any problems, just thought I'd ask.

    Sounds like gearbox bearings.
    The clutch should be totally silent at all times (in or out)

    Yep, usually layshaft. Just keep an eye (or ear in this case) on the noise.
    The diesel boxes can tend to rattle like this so it may well be fine.

    how could you believe anything the previous owner told you after all the problems you have had.

    If you can tune yourself to listen for it, you'll hear it in every gear, more-so the lower one's, so not just at idle and in neutral.

    Mine has gotten worse since I last went out on a trip, and is especially noisy in reverse now.

    I have lined up a second hand box, so I'd maybe suggest you do the same for when yours fails.

    I agree with those above, you're a very patient man.

    If you are unlucky its the input shaft main bearing.

    To check
    Drain the oil into a clean tub and drag a magnet through the oil that comes out. If theres metal chunks or fine magnetic flakes its internal to the gearbox. To extend the life of whats left in there thats still working, fit a strong magnet to the fill plug, keep the gearbox full of light oil (5-30 wtengine oil or ATF) and clean the magnet every month. This helps keep the metal bits that come off of the bearing from mixing with the oil and slows down (a little) the increased wear that is going to be happening to all the other gearbox parts. NO TOWING, short shift the first 3 gears and try to stay in 4th. If after the first month you have no metal on the plug then

    If theres no metal in the oil OR on the plug at your monthly check then you got lucky and its the torsion springs in the friction plate

    If the noise is only in Neutral at idle i would suspect the clutch release bearing, is the noise rattly metallic sound, does the noise disappear with slight pressure on the clutch pedal, if you're lucky, Regards Frank.

    This sounds exactly like what I'm hearing. I don't really know much about clutches and I haven't noticed noises anywhere else instead of in neutral at idle when the clutch is out. There definitely isn't any noise loud enough to hear anything at all while driving.

    Hahaha generally I'm a very patient guy (my wife should be able to tell you that ZING!) and the Disco is great so it's worth it! I like pulling crap apart and learning too, that's my nerdy side coming out...but with grease and oil and big manly car parts Plus I don't have money to get someone else to do it for me!

    You guys help a lot with that, this forum is awesome

    When my thrust bearing went, it was only rattley and noisey when I depressed the clutch pedal, as this is when contact with the clutch plate happens thus noise as the bearing spins.( or lack of spinning as mine had the plastic bearing holder melt from friction)

    When in Neutral it just sits on the throw out lever and it shouldn't spin as the drive shaft passes through it.
